Gamesley Community Awards 2011

Tonight, along with Cllr Dave Wilcox and the other Cllr Mckeown, I had the privilage of attending this year's Gamesley Community Awards.

The awards which have been running for a few years now, started life (as I understand) as a way to mark the achivements of folk that had been completing adult education classes in various things, but was soon expanded to include the community awards element which is a great ways of the various groups and bodies that work on the estate being able to show thanks to the volunteers and people in the community who from the basic of just been a good neighbour to getting involved in neighbourhood watch and a whole range of other activities make our community a better place.

I'll add (hopefully at some point) a complete list of the winners, but the photo above show all the winners that were in attendance. There's also a whole host of other photo's that you can view on my flickr page, by clicking here.

Many thanks to the various organisers led by Pat Javaund, and more importantly a big thankyou to all the winner for all that they do, and importantly if you know someone who is doing work within our community and wasn't amongst those recognised this evening, let me know as to a certain extent the process of making nominations for next years winners starts now !

Robbery / Attempted burglary

If you’ve seen any of the local papers this week, you will have seen the stories put together by them from the following press release from the Police :

[Reference: BG100 Press release - Glossop]

Press release:
Police are appealing for information about a robbery and attempted burglary.
A couple visited a cash machine in Winster Mews, Glossop, at about 11.05pm on Thursday 13th January.
While the woman, who is in her 20s, used the machine, her disabled partner sat in his car nearby. She was approached by three men, who threatened her and demanded money. One of the men then approached the car and threatened the man.
The couple did not hand over any property and drove home together.
At around 12.45am the following morning, the couple were asleep at their home in Totley Green when they heard shouting outside and the sound of smashing glass.
The man, who is in his 40s, went to investigate and found three men trying to break in. He called police and they ran off.
Officers have arrested two men, aged 18 and 25, in connection with both incidents. They have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Anyone with information should call police on 0345 123 33 33 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

From conversations with some local’s there is a concern that the details put forward by the Police don’t cover all the issues around the story, but I would echo my comments in the paper’s that this type of incident is very rare both locally and across the High Peak, and the welcome fast response from the police in making several quick arrests, will I hope prevent this type of incident from happening again.

Moving on up !

Well I think that’s the case (or at least sideways in any event !) for Gamesley Beat Bobby Paula Doyle who after a number of years as part of the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Team is moving on to a new role as coordinator for antisocial behaviour and persons susceptible to harm in the area of the Glossop, Hadfield, Gamesley, New Mills and surrounding areas.

Paula has being an integral part of a whole variety of schemes which have run across the Gamesley and Charlesworth area all with the intention of tackling crime and related issues in the area, and was recognised for her success in that work in the area in 2005 when she was awarded with the Chief Constable's Cup.

She moves onto the new role on the 19th July, her successor within the team has not yet being appointed, and I’m sure if you see her over the course of the next week or so, you’ll want to join me in passing on your best wishes for the future and thanks for the work done within the area during the last few years.

Gamesley Dispersal Order

As mentioned earlier the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Team  have now confirmed that a new dispersal order has been obtained covering the whole of the Gamesley Estate.

The dispersal order will cover the same area as the one we had in 2007 - details here - and will take effect from Monday 11th January and runs for six months, and although in a sense it is partly aimed at young people causing anti social behaviour the order applies to anyone of any age in the area who is in a group of 2 or more causing a nuisance.

The period of the order will also see a range of 'diversionary' activities running including OzBox sessions, Gamesblast sessions and weekly football coaching amongst others.

Further details are available in the Police press release which for ease of use is copied below :

Dispersal order to target nuisance behaviour in Gamesley

Police have been granted a dispersal order to target nuisance and anti-social behaviour in Gamesley.
The order, part of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, was applied for by the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, after a rise in reports of anti-social behaviour in the area from residents, local councillors and High Peak Community Housing.
It gives officers and PCSOs the power to break up groups of two or more people they believe could cause trouble and order them to leave a designated area for 24 hours.
Youngsters under the age of 16 can also be taken home by officers as part of the order.
PC Paula Doyle of the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We have been speaking to residents and working with the Gamesley Residents Association, local councillors and Neighbourhood Watch, who have all expressed concerns about nuisance behaviour.
"The dispersal order will allow us to actively target and remove potential troublemakers from the area quickly and effectively. We take the views and concerns of local residents and community representatives seriously and anti-social behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated."
A selection of diversionary activities are being put on for youngsters by a number of organisations including High Peak Community Safety Partnership, Derbyshire Youth Service and the police while the dispersal order is in place.
There will be twice weekly boxing sessions at Gamesley Community Centre, OzBox sessions, Gamesblast sessions and weekly football coaching among others.
It is hoped that youngsters will make use of these activities as an alternative to gathering on the streets and reduce reports of nuisance behaviour.
The dispersal order covers the Gamesley area, within the boundaries of Glossop Road, A57 Dinting Vale, Melandra Road, and the track which runs past Melandra Castle Farm, up to Melandra Castle Road.
It comes into force on Monday, January 11 2010 and runs for six months.
Anyone breaching the dispersal order faces up to three months in prison or a £2,500 fine.
For more information or to contact the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team call 0345 123 33 33 or email glossop.neighbourhoods@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk.
Youngsters can also find activities taking place in the area by visiting Derbyshire County Council's TooDoo website, which features a database of activities in the area, and further details.

Beatsweep – ‘On patrol’

On Friday night as part of the recent Beatsweep that Derbyshire Police has been running within the Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Team Area as part of their operation relentless, local councillor’s and MP Tom Levitt, joined the police on a walkabout with a difference to see some of the challenges they face around in particular anti social behaviour.

The motley group consisted of myself, Cllr Bob Mckeown, Cllr Chris Webster, Hannah Cocker the council’s anti social behaviour officer, along with MP Tom Levitt, Sgt Barry Doyle, PC Julian Gallagher and PCSO Lee Willows

We started off with a tour around Gamesley which I was pleased to see was extremely quiet in terms of very few people hanging about anywhere on the Friday evening. We then travelled up to Manor Park, where the Derbyshire County Youth Services had had an event on with an aim to tackle some of the potential anti social behaviour by providing alternative activities.

By the time we arrived at the event it was drawing to a close, but from the folk remaining it seemed to have been a successful event with around 200 youths from across Glossopdale in attendance, a number of us were concerned with the choice of venue for this event, as Manor Park was more or less pitch black as there is very little lighting in the park, and whilst the activity involved glow bands and fluorescent football etc and just from a health and safety point of view given the numbers involved it did seem that other venues in the Glossop area or possible looking at closing off a car park for the evening may be better than in the dark park.

However that said the event appeared to have been very successful, but following the event it seemed very difficult to get many of the those attending the event to then leave the park, and the noise within the park must be quite a concern for local residents around the park area.

Following on from that we viewed various other areas within Old Glossop, and saw how the Police work with local traders to try and tackle young people getting alcohol, we then returned to Manor Park and saw firsthand the difficulties that the police were having in trying to disperse some of the groups still left in attendance, and the number of them many aged just between 13 – 16 that were already intoxicated and showing very little willingness to observe the police requests to leave the area.

By around 9.00pm many of the youths had left many park, but were still within the area and the police took further steps including using a torch like tool that could identify if any of the young people stopped had had a drink or if they had bottles / cans of coke, could check the bottle or can for any added alcohol, and following on from one of these check a young girl was identified from just outside of the Glossopdale area, very intoxicated and with little clue of how she was getting home, eventually requiring the Police to take her home, taking up Police time unnecessarily.

We returned to the town centre, and the Police were able to make use of a valuable tool they have in dealing with anti social behaviour and that is to issue a ‘section 27’ notice which required a person that has been identified by officers as a potential trouble causer to leave the area for a certain amount of time or face arrest if they return to or remain in the area.

Now the section 27 notice whilst useful couldn’t help with some of the issues in dealing with groups of youth’s causing problems as it is only useable on people over 16, and whilst it might not sound ‘nice’ to consider using this type of measure on young people, when dealing with some of the groups of youths that were in the town centre drunk at 9.30 and beyond at night, it could help to tackle some of the issues before they have to look at arresting and taking more stringent action if the rowdy behaviour become more.

All in all an interesting evening that help to clarify some of the difficulties that the Police can experience when trying to deal with issues around anti social behaviour, it also helped fax in my mind how bad on occasions it can be people for people living around places like Manor Park, along with the importance of supporting any efforts to put on ‘diversionary’ activities to try and stop these concerns becoming problems.

Police Consultation

As noted earlier this past weekend the local police have been busy completing surveys on local people’s views on crime and disorder issues.

For the two sessions that took place on the estate they seemed to be a steady flow of locals who were nabbed for the questionnaire, and I understand from talking to the beat team members doing the survey that there time in Glossop was as busy with local willing to go through the survey.

In terms of the Gamesley results they will help reflect the work of the forthcoming ‘beat sweep’ which will take place in October. If you’ve not heard of a beat sweep before, it’s essentially the same process as what we carried out in Hadfield last year.

Essentially the police look to concentrate along with other agencies such as the council, housing etc in one particular area for a week or so, to address problems that locals have raised mainly of a crime and disorder nature, but also other issues that affect quality of life, such as street cleaning, graffiti etc.

Further details will be posted on the range of events that will take place during the beat sweep shortly, but if you would like to add your views into to last weekend’s survey please contact the beat team either via the HPCH office on Winster Mews or by phone on 0345 113 3333

News from the Police

Following on from a spate of incidents last week, the police have sent the following message to all the neighbourhood watch co-ordinators in the Gamesley area :

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Buxton - BG663 Vehicle damage, Glossop]

Overnight on Wednedsday 2nd/Thursday 3rd September 2009, a spate of attacks on motor vehicles took place on Cottage Lane, the Eyam and Bakewell areas of Gamesley. A number of vehicles had their number plates ripped off and stolen or damaged as well as around 17 vehicle badges and motifs being removed or damaged in the Glossop area. We would ask that anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious that night please contact the police on 0345 123 33 33. The officer in the case is Pc 3307 Neale of Glossop Police.

In recent weeks there has been an increase in thefts of unattended pedal cycles-mainly from rear gardens/yards where they have been left insecure.

We would ask that all persons who own pedal cycles try to lock them away when not in use and to also make a record of frame numbers and get them security marked, if possible.

Thank you.

Trisha Mellor, B Division Community Information Officer, Corporate Communications, Buxton Police Station

Lend-A-Cam Your help needed

Entry forms are available from the High Peak Community Housing Office on Winster Mews and Glossop Town Hall, and all entries must be submitted by the 24th July 2009.

Most locals in both Gamesley and elsewhere in Glossopdale will have heard of the lend-a-cam scheme.

In case you haven't it's scheme where by the Safer Neighbourhood Team's can make available a camera for usage in recording incidents such as anti social behaviour, with the footage been used by local police and other agencies to take action against those problems.

At current there are twelve cameras in operation and in order to be able to help more people the Police have put together a bid for additional funds. Now unusually for this type of bid the determining factor for how will get the funds will be how many votes are received for the proposal.

To vote on the proposal please go to http://cashback.cisonline.gov.uk and select Derbyshire, Have your say and then the High Peak Anti Social Behaviour Project and follow the instructions to vote (this link may go straight to it : http://cashback.cjsonline.gov.uk/cc.asp?area=7&mode=vote).

Please do so if you have the time so that a better service than is already available can be offered
