Keep Fit Exercise Session

The Tameside and Glossop Health Improvement Service (formerly part of the the Tameside and Glossop PCT - but now part of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust) are starting Keep Fit Exercise sessions, running every
Tuesdays 6-7pm at the Gamesley Community Centre.

The cost is £2 per session and men and women aged 16 years+ are welcome. However please note, there will be no session on 23rd Aug and 30th Aug

Summer Holiday Activities

In case you’ve not heard it’s the start of the summer holidays today, and as well as the activities going on in Glossop, there is also a full range of activities taking place at the Gamesley Sport and Community Centre on Melandra Castle Road.

This week’s activities are as follows :

Mon 26^th July – Sports coaching 1pm till 4pm and Street Dancing 1pm till 4pm

Wed 28^th July – Bouncy Castle 2pm till 4pm

Friday 30^th July – Music Sessions – 1pm till 4pm and 6pm till 9pm * pre booking is required

Gamesley Community Centre

Just as a little bit of an update I have had a number of meetings over recent weeks looking into options for improving the future for the community centre.

Talks are still ongoing at current but I’m very hopeful that the suggestions on the table will be both work to improve the range of activities at the centre along with developing the amount of community involvement to ensure the future for the centre looks bright.

Forthcoming events...

This Saturday sees this year's Chapel Lane Park Fun day taking place from
1.00pm at Chapel Lane Park on Mersey Bank Road in Hadfield. A full range of
events will be taking place, for more details contact Edward Siddall on

Also on Saturday young people from the Gamesley Youth Club are holding
between 1.00pm and 4.00pm a car wash to raise fund for a new kitchen. Cost
per car is £5.

Chill and thrill on Friday’s

As an add on to the Gameblast sessions that started last Friday, thanks to £375 funding from the High Peak Community Safety Partnership, a new Chill and Thrill drop in sessions have been started from 7.00pm until 9.00pm on Friday’s

The sessions which are run in partnership by High Peak Borough Council, Gamesley Community Centre Partnership and Derbyshire Police’s Gamesley and Charlesworth Safer Neighbourhood Team will offer young people over 13 a choice of chilling while playing pool or a thrill of a sports session on the courts with a trained coach.

The sessions which will cost £1.20 or a combined price with a Gameblast session at £2.00 will offer youngsters a safe, dry place to socialise without hanging on the streets.

School holidays

Depending on which of the local schools you may have children attending, this week sees either the first week back after or the second week of the Easter Holidays.

For those who are still off, there is still a range of events taking place across Glossopdale including a number of activities taking place on or around Gamesley including a session at the 'Roman gardens' between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday, a trip to the science museum on Thursday along with boxing in the evening and a parent and toddler chocolate hunt on Friday.

Hard luck to local boxers

Commiserations to local boxers Ali Nuumbembe and Ricky Hatton, who despite providing excellent performances on Saturday night / the early hours of Sunday morning lost to there respective opponents.

Now despite there loses at the weekend, as the careers of the two local boxers so far to date and the work required to get those results have received good media coverage it may well still encourage more youngsters to get involved in the sport.

Perhaps this could even lead in the future to a boxing champion coming through Gamesley’s own boxing club established earlier this year by locals Steve Brady and Billy Turner at Gamesley’s Sport and Community Centre.

Panto / Christmas Market Reminder / Glossop Lights

Sunday saw a successful Panto in the Community Centre on Gamesley with around 140 people in attendance.

Many thanks to Lisa and all who helped organise the event including the funding assistance for the event from the DCC community fund organised by County Councillor Dave Wilcox.

As mentioned previously this Thursday night sees this years Christmas Market, please come along if you can, events and activities running from 5.30pm until 9.00pm for more details contact the GRA Office on the shops.

Finally on the events front, Friday evening sees the big switch on of the Christmas Lights in Glossop. The fun starts at 6.00pm in Glossop’s Norfolk Square with a live performance from Big Chas and the Business along with a live broadcast from High Peak Radio.

Gamesley and Glossop District Healthy Heart Group

Tomorrow (Tuesday) see’s a meeting of the Gamesley and Glossop District Healthy Heart Group.

The group is a support group for people who are suffering with heath conditions along with there careers and family.

The group which meets on the second Tuesday of each month covers a range of topics and sessions including guest speakers such as tomorrows session which will see a gentle health walk to Melandra Caste where a talk will be delivered by local archaeologist, Pat Ellison along with an opportunity to look at some actually Roman finds excavated from the site.

The summer holidays are now drawing to a close, with the last few summer events taking place over the next few days contact either the Community Centre or the High Peak Community Housing Office for further details.

Tameside and Glossop PCT – Health for Life Festival

Congratulation to all involved in organising this year health for life festival event which took place in the Community Centre on Saturday, a good range of stalls offering information on a variety of health related issues, along with a stall from High Peak Community Housing showing information about the Glossopdale Young Women’s group and the tool hire scheme, and for those of a more active nature, demonstrations from the Gamesley boxing club, on the activities available there.

Tameside and Glossop PCT – Health for Life Festival

The Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust 'Health is for life festival 2007' comes to Gamesley on Saturday 2nd June between 11.00am and 3.00pm, when a range of events will be held at the Gamesley Community Centre.

Activities at the event will include dance, boxing, lacrosse and football, with a chance for the less energetic to sample some Reiki healing or enjoy a pampering beauty treatment.

Representatives from local organisations and services - including High Peak Borough Council, High Peak Community Housing, High Peak CVS, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and Cottage Lane Surgery - will be available to advise on healthier living, and entry is free.

Gamesley safer neighbourhood team

Friday 4th May saw a meeting of the Gamesley and Charlesworth safer neighbourhood team.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend due to been at the local elections count.

However a number of local residents were and they received updates from the local beat team on a number of issue's including the lend a cam scheme, dispersal order, keep your school safe scheme, along with the good news about there now been 21 neighbourhood watches on the estate.

The meeting also discussed a number of forthcoming events, details of which will be appearing soon here.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday 2nd August at 2pm at the Community Centre and if you would like to get involved I'm sure you would be welcome.

Gamesley Safer Neighbourhood Team Meeting

Friday afternoon saw a meeting of the Gamesley Safer Neighbourhood Team, which is representatives of all the various agencies working on Gamesley, along with the Police, and Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator's from both Gamesley and Charlesworth.

A whole range of issue's were covered from current problems on the shops, and at the Centre, with Londis recently joining the Glossopdale Shop Watch scheme.

Updates on efforts to try and deal with some of the more persistent offenders with a number of ASBO's been applied for soon, and preparations for the forthcoming dispersal orders coming shortly.

As well as updates on the sanction's planned there was also updates on the forthcoming fairplay scheme, work the community cafe is doing, along with the keep your school safe scheme that is currently been set up.

Gamesley Community Centre Partnership Meeting

Monday night saw another meeting of the Community Centre Group, with a rage of issue’s been discussed about the centre including current security arrangements, activities, repairs and a start on how the centre will be developed in the future.

Monday’s meeting was also Lisa the Centre’s managers, last for a short while, as she finished on Friday for maternity lead. Since starting at the Centre Lisa along with the team have made great steps to getting the centre, packed full of a range of activities to try and meet the various needs of local residents, and although a temporary replacement will be made, I’m sure she will be missed.
