Woodhead Tunnel - briefing note

Officers at the council have earlier this week circulated a briefing note to
councillors on the current situation with regards to the Woodhead Tunnels.

The paper notes the current situation with regards to the tunnels and the
plans from National Grid along with the currently limited options for
preserve the route for rail due to neither the Peak District National Park
nor the Secretary of State been willing to intervene to protect the tunnels,
the PDNP on the grounds of insufficient powers and the SOS due to the
limited prospect of tunnel reopening to rail traffic.

The paper closes by advising that the council should maintain a watching
brief on developments through liaison with the South Pennines Integrated
Transport Strategy (SPITS) group, who would like to see the tunnel brought
back into use for rail travel.
