Community Empowerment

Another trip over to New Mills on Saturday, for a session organised by Tom
Levitt on the theme of Community Empowerment.

Along with around 25 representatives of local groups and bodies including
Pat Wilson from High Peak Borough Council and Sharon McCambridge from High
Peak Community Housing we discussed for around 2 hours some of the issues
around increasing and improving community empowerment.

The details from Tom also included a brief review of the findings of the
volunteering commission and aspects of the work that the government are
considering in the future.

In the general discussion section that followed there were some interesting
comments including a call (unexpected by me) by one of the residents groups
in attendance for more powers to local councils to tackle some of the issues
that come up.

All in all it was an interesting session with a number of areas been covered
including a need for improving the accountability at times of officers
across the various public bodies along with mentions of the current
favourite topic for everyone of allotments !
