Welfare Reform

Last Friday evening saw a trip to Whaley Bridge for this months High Peak
Labour Party meeting where the main topic for discussion was the recently
published green paper on Welfare Reform.

The paper entitled No one written off is proposing a wide number of changes
to the benefits system with a number of the measurers featuring on the pages
of most of the daily newspapers following the green papers release.

Amongst the areas highlighted on Friday night were the pathways to work
scheme trailed in the High Peak, changes to income support and incapacity
benefit which concerned many of the members present on Friday evening along
with concerns that the message many people will have picked up from reading
newspaper coverage of the reforms will only have been about the 'stick'
rather than the carrot of potential improvements.
