Polling station review

Thursday saw the Glossopdale session for looking at the polling stations and polling districts in Glossopdale, which despite a range of advertising prior to the meeting to encourage ‘public involvement’ saw no members of the public in attendance.

A number of issues by the Councillor’s present, particularly around the polling stations within the Old Glossop Ward and the Hadfield part of Tintwistle Ward.

One note of concern from the responses received both in advance and at the meeting was that to date aside from comments from representatives of the disabled access group in New Mills. No other comments from any of the other disabled access groups across the Borough including the Glossop one had been received.

3rd times a charm

On a bad day locally for us, I was successfully elected for a 3 time to represent Gamesley on High Peak Borough Council.

A big thank you to those of you that voted for me on Gamesley, and also to those of you elsewhere that voted Labour, particular in Hadfield South where my dad Bob was re-elected.

As I noted above, locally the election results weren't great for us, with Joyce Broklehurst losing her seat in Tintwistle, and 'youngster's Ellie Wilcox and Edward Siddall, falling to the 'national trend' and not getting elected in there respective wards.

Congratulations however to my brother Rob, who whilst he didn’t win did get a higher vote than I did when I stood in Charlesworth in 1998.

David Miliband visit’s Glossop

Anthony and David Miliband
Originally uploaded by AnthonyMck.

As part of the Kinder Trespass celebrations that took place on Saturday 21st April, just before the local elections, we were able to ‘borrow’ David Miliband from his part in the celebration events in New Mills to attend to a number of events in both Buxton and Glossop.

The Glossop event took the form of a Q&A session on the theme of what local government can do to impact climate change, and started off with a short speech from Tom Levitt MP, followed by David Miliband, with questions from the mixed audience of local Labour Party people, a green party representative and a few others.

The topics covered ranged from renewable energy, planning law, transport, to most things in between and Miliband, gave good answers that seemed to satisfy the audience present that he both knew his brief, but was also concerned about what can be done to tackle the range of problems in his area of responsibility.

Local Election’s 2007

As you may have seen in last week’s local papers, nominations have closed for the local elections that will take place on Thursday 3rd May.

Locally (despite been missed out of the list of candidates in the Glossop Advertiser) I am standing for re-election, against an independent and a Lib Dem from New Mills.

Elsewhere the other Cllr Mckeown and Ian Rose’s hopeful replacement Edward Siddall face 2 Tories, 1 Lib Dem and another independent.
