Social inclusion committee

Monday (29th January) evening saw a meeting of the Social Inclusion Select
Committee which featured a range of issues, including an interesting
presentation on the first contact service which is currently been trailed in
High Peak and Derbyshire Dales and aims to improve access to 'services' for
vulnerable people.

The meeting also considered reports on Community Safety, High Peak Community
Housing, and a sub group the committee has set up to look into issues around
Affordable Housing.

The committee also considered a report following on the Christmas full
council meeting where a motion recommending that the council opt in to the
sustainable communities act, was amended by the controlling group to go for
further consideration instead, but which when discussed at the committee
last night, aside from a few members there was little interest to consider
the act further, despite there been some interest from various local
residents / groups in the council signing up to the process.

Eventually a sub group of willing members was put together (and may be added
to) which will look into act and what the potential benefits, costs and
impact may be to the council if it was to sign up to the process.

The group will also consider proposals such as transferring powers from the
council that can be suggested by local residents to tackle the issues the
act covers, although officers at the council don't think we will receive too
many proposals on that.
