previous year's events is been run by 'Co-awareness', who are working to
raise awareness of the dangers of Carbon monoxide, and will be continuing to
call on the Government, regulators and industry to tighten procedures for
inspection and maintenance of equipment.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is usually the result of poorly maintained
boilers or other domestic appliances, with a number of people dieing each
year due to this including in 2005 two Glossopdale residents.
One issues not often flagged up with regards to CO poisoning is smoking and
to this end the Tameside and Glossop Health Improvement Team will be
offering local people the opportunity to have their C0 readings taken at the
Gamesley Community Centre on Monday 17 November anytime between 10-5.
The reason for offering this service is that high levels of carbon monoxide
can be found in smokers who are rarely seen not smoking as well as from the
more traditional sources as listed above. This also includes cannabis and
cigar smokers as these contain high levels of CO.
The readings are undertaken by gently blowing into a hand held device which
is used to monitor CO readings by the Stop Smoking Service.
Many homes now have a Carbon Monoxide monitor which sounds an alarm if
carbon monoxide is present, and under current legislation High Peak
Community Housing carry out annual checks on all its tenants heating
appliances
However if you're home isn't currently covered please look at taking
precautions to protect yourself and your family, by making sure that your
domestic appliances are maintained and that Carbon Monoxide alarms are
fitted in your homes. An information leaflet and guide to the different

In addition to the 'legal duties' High Peak Community Housing are also
supporting the initiative been run by the Health Improvement Team.
