Former respected local councillor and Labour stalwart John Francis, passed away on Friday afternoon (2nd May) at the age of 83.
John, who was a local councillor on High Peak Borough Council from 1976 until 2003 most of that time representing the Gamesley Ward, was also Deputy Mayor from 1992 to 1993 and Mayor from 1993 to 1994 and a long time member of the Planning (Development Control) Committee.
In addition to his wide and varied duties on the council John was also a school Governor at a number of schools across the area including over the years Gamesley Community Primary School, St Margaret’s, Glossopdale Community College and the Early Excellence Centre as well as an active member of the Gamesley Residents Association, Gamesley Bowling Club and Neighbour Watch.
John has also over the years served on the High Peak Police Consultative Group, Geoffrey Allen Church Centre Management Committee, West Pennine Health Authority, Jericho Project, North Area Tenant Consumer Panel, Community Health Council, Glossop TIC Management Committee and Glossop Police Liaison Group.
John was a highly respected and dedicated local councillor, as well as a well liked neighbour, friend and family man who leaves behind his wife Norah, Son John and I am sure he will be hugely missed.
A book of remembrance has been set up in the GRA Office on Winster Mews for locals who wish to leave there own tribute to John and any comments left on this blog will also be passed on.
